If two people are merely friends, then it is misleading to say “they are dating. Accordingly, when we are speaking of “dating” we are referring to something more than just friendly relationships between people of opposite persuasion. We are talking about a peculiar kind of relationship that is beyond mere friendship. If dating includes giving one’s heart away or any sort of exclusive relationship-claim whereby obligations are imposed upon another person without an eye toward marriage, then not only may Christians not date non-Christians – they may not date Christians either! When a woman gives her heart away to a man outside of a marriage commitment, the “boyfriend” is placed in the position of exercising unbiblical authority over the woman that is reserved for the woman’s prime, earthly authority typically her father and is one day to be transferred to the woman’s husband. In such exclusive dating-relationships the woman’s conscience becomes un-biblically bound by the boyfriend whereby she loses certain privileges of singleness, such as spending time with other men who might be good candidates for marriage. Nobody except a parent or spouse is to hold such a position over someone else. A single woman is to submit to her father, not her “boyfriend. What is it to have a commitment to another that can be broken for any reason?

This statement, penned at Westminster Abbey in London in the mid-seventeenth century, has stood the test of time as a summary expression of the teaching of the Bible. Put into the language of personal confession, nineteenth century, Princeton theologian B. Warfield summarized the Westminster Confession and its catechisms. The Bible I believe that my one aim in life and death should be to glorify God and enjoy Him forever; and that God teaches me how to glorify and enjoy Him in His Holy Word, that is, the Bible, which He has given by the infallible inspiration of His Holy Spirit in order that I may certainly know what I am to believe concerning Him and what duty He requires of me.
God I believe that God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal and incomparable in all that He is; one God but three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, my Creator, my Redeemer, and my Sanctifier; in whose power and wisdom, righteousness, goodness and truth I may safely put my trust. The Creation I believe that the heavens and the earth, and all that is in them, are the work of God’s hands; and that all that He has made He directs and governs in all their actions; so that they fulfill the end for which they were created, and I who trust in Him shall not be put to shame but may rest securely in the protection of His almighty love.

I hope that such a momentous occasion will not only be cause for celebration if you are a Protestant, but also for deep reflection. Sometimes they like to date each other. I remind them of the grace of the Gospel for any past or future failure, and that this is not the one, irrevocable sin. I encourage them to look to Christ, develop their relationship with him, and all the good spiritual, foundational stuff. These are not hard and fast unbreakable rules. They are wisdom, though. Some of them may seem childish or nit-picky.

Though Perkins is best known today for his writings on predestination, he also wrote prolifically on many subjects. However, his complete works have not been in print since the mid-seventeenth century. A Digest or Harmony of the Books of the Old and New Testament, offers a synopsis of the Bible that relates sacred history to the chronology of the world. Perkins was justly esteemed by his contemporaries as a master in theology.
Spurgeon On the broad shoulders of William Perkins, epoch-making pioneer, stood the entire school of seventeenth-century Puritan pastors and divines, yet the Puritan reprint industry has steadily bypassed him. Now, however, he begins to reappear, admirably edited, and at last this yawning gap is being filled. Profound thanks to the publisher and heartfelt praise to God have become due. To see his works reprinted in a reader-friendly format and with state-of-the-art critical apparatus as a bonus seems too good to be true.
This project is a landmark event for both Reformation scholarship and the spiritual edification of Christians. The Puritan theological tradition did not emerge out of a vacuum. It was shaped by leaders and theologians who set the trajectory of the movement and shaped its commitments. William Perkins was one of those men. Even now, every true gospel minister stands in debt to Perkins, and in his shadow.
